As the number of COVID-19 instances in China continues to rise, the Chinese government has issued stay-at-home restrictions to millions more residents in the country’s northeast regions. Following the highest rise in COVID cases since the pandemic’s original breakout in Wuhan two years ago, the government imposed harsh lockdown limitations on nearly 5 million individuals. With focused lockdowns, mass screening, and travel bans, the government has mostly held the virus at bay since its initial outbreak in 2020.
With the anticipated spread of the stealth Omicron variety, the country’s COVID curve is growing dramatically this time. China just reported its second virus-related fatality in over a year.
