A couple in Madhya Pradesh’s Jabalpur have deployed 9 and 3 guards to protect what they consider to be one of the ‘costliest’ Miyazaki mango variety in the world.

Out of the total 150 trees of this ‘rare’ mango variety in the orchard of Sankalp and Rani Parihar, only four are bearing fruits now. They had initially planted 50 trees and later 100 more. Overall, there are 1,100 different trees in the orchard located on Chargawan road, around 25kms from Jabalpur district headquarters.

“Around 4 years ago, we were going to Chennai looking for a rare variety of coconut having different colours. During a casual discussion about our purpose of Chennai visit, a fellow traveller offered us this rare varieties of mangoes,” said Shankar Parihar.

He further added, “Initially, I was not aware of the breed. But once the trees bore fruit, we realised that the plants were of some rare variety.”

Parihar has now also increased security at his orchard following theft cases last year.

“Last year there were theft incidents and so we decided to increase security here. We had one dog last year, now we have nine of them; six are German Shephards and 3 are local breeds. And we have deployed three security guards too,” said Parihar.

“So far we haven’t sold even a single piece. A buyer was ready to pay Rs 21,000 for a piece. As of now we have not made any plans for selling,” he added.
