Authorities claimed on Monday that an angry crowd damaged 66 houses and burned down 20 Hindu homes in Bangladesh, where ethnic tensions have been festering since the Durga Puja attacks. A social media post was the catalyst for the violence.
The arson incident, which took place late Sunday in a village in Rangpur district’s Pirganj Upazila, roughly 255 kilometers from Dhaka, was carried out by a crowd of around 100 persons, according to local media.
Assistant Police Superintendent Mohammad Kamruzzaman told reporters that the police raced to a fishermen’s area as tensions rose over a rumor that a young Hindu man from the village had ‘dishonored religion’ in a Facebook post.
