During the first COVID-19 wave in India last year, antibiotic purchases were increased according to a research indicating that medicinal products, notably azithromycin, were utilised to cure mild and moderate infections.
Researchers have studied quarterly revenue of all antibiotics in the Indian private health sector in January 2018 to December 2020 to determine the impact of the pandemic on antibiotic use. The statistics were provided by an Indian division of IQVIA, an IT corporation in the United States.
Scientists found that the number of antibiotics sold in India in 2020 was 16.29 billion, significantly less than that of 2018 and 2019.
