According to Khaama Press, citing a Wall Street Journal report, members of the previous government’s intelligence body in Afghanistan are now affiliating with ISIS-K to survive and resist the Taliban. The former security personnel, according to the publication, are mostly US-trained Afghan spies who have joined the terror group in northern Afghanistan. Following the Taliban takeover, the northern resistance was the only resisting group in Panjshri province, co-led by Ahmad Masoud and former first vice president Amrullah Saleh.
Northern resistance, led by Ahmad Masoud and former first vice president Amrullah Saleh, was the lone resistance force in Panjshri province when the Taliban took power. According to Khaama Press, the WSJ report goes on to say that former Afghan spies are joining ISIS-K to reclaim their income after the government collapsed and to fight the Taliban.
