Pakistan’s efforts to have the Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan recognized on a global scale were crushed when the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) refused to allow a Taliban official to speak at its session, instead of inviting a delegate from the deposed Ashraf Ghani government.
Going by the events of the last week at the United Nations General Assembly, the international community may continue to deny the Taliban rule in Afghanistan any recognition or representation, at least for the time being.
At the United Nations, Pakistan waged a vigorous campaign in support of the Afghan Taliban. It sparked outrage in the United States, disgust in Europe, and domestic opposition to Imran Khan’s government.
