A farmer who was hurt in a police lathi charge in Karnal on Saturday died of a heart attack, according to senior BKU leader Gurnam Singh Chaduni. Farmers demonstrating in Karnal were beaten up by Haryana Police on Saturday, with several people hurt in a lathi charge near the Bastara Toll Plaza on the national highway.
Farmers were protesting against a BJP conference on the approaching panchayat elections, which was headed by Chief Minister Manohar Lal Khattar. In the afternoon, police detained many people after using force to remove a gathering obstructing the roadway in Karnal.
Farm union representatives condemned the police action and asked farmers across Haryana to demonstrate on the highways. Farmers had blocked many stretches of roadway and toll plazas around the state by the evening, causing traffic jams.
