On Friday, a day after the Supreme Court dismissed the sedition case against journalist Vinod Dua, journalist organisations, including the Editors Guild of India (EGI), applauded the decision.
On Thursday, the Supreme Court ruled that every journalist has the right to protection, custody or FIR is subject to preceding legislation. However, the tribunal refused to order the establishment of a commission to evaluate sedition accusations against reporters.
EGI welcomes the Supreme Court’s caution about the stifling impact of independent press and our democracy by sedition legislation. The Guild calls for abolition of these oppressive, old rules which have no room in modern free democracy.
