To achieve social fairness, the Tamil Nadu Assembly passed a bill on Monday to abolish the National Entrance cum Eligibility Test (NEET) and allow admission to medical colleges based on Class 12 marks.
All parties backed the Bill, which seeks to provide for admission to UG degrees in medicine, dentistry, Indian medicine, and homeopathy based on Class 12 marks, including the main opposition AIADMK and its ally PMK, as well as others like the Congress. The BJP staged a walkout in protest of the government’s decision.
Stalin introduced the bill after a high-level committee chaired by retired judge AK Rajan delivered its report in July. The report was developed after going into roughly 86,000 representations from various stakeholders, the majority of whom claimed they do not want NEET, as per the retired Madras High Court Judge.
