Before the byelection on Saturday, voters, particularly women, staged dharnas in numerous villages in Telangana’s Huzurabad assembly constituency, publicly demanding compensation for their ‘keemti’ (precious) vote. They demanded the bribe as if it were their right and chanted anti-politician slogans, exposing the open reality that all political parties spend the campaign trail trying to buy as many votes as possible.
After sitting MLA and former health minister Eatala Rajender resigned from the seat and TRS over his differences with chief minister K Chandrasekhar Rao, a by-election was called in Huzurabad.
