Swedish Social Democrat leader Stefan Lofven was re-elected as Prime Minister by Parliament on Wednesday, putting an end to weeks of uncertainty following his resignation last month but putting his center-left coalition in a bind ahead of next year’s elections.
Lofven, who resigned after losing a no-confidence vote on June 21, has failed to secure enough support to pass a budget and has stated that he will resign again if his budget is not approved by parliament in the autumn.
In order to prevent a majority vote against him in the Swedish Riksdag, Lofven needed to avoid a majority vote. He just averted defeat by two votes in the 349-seat parliament, with one member crossing party ranks to back him.
