The Gujarat administration announced earlier this week that the Bhagavad Gita will be included in the state’s school curriculum for grades VI through XII beginning in the academic year 2022-23. The Karnataka government is also contemplating including the Gita in state schools in the division of ‘moral teaching.’ Other Bharatiya Janata Party-ruled states, as well as the Central Board of Secondary Education, are likely to follow suit soon.
Jitu Vaghani, Gujarat’s education minister, said the choice to teach the Gita is in keeping with the Union government’s New Education Policy, which encourages children to learn about historic and ancient cultures that will make them proud of India’s great history.
