Ukraine rejected Russian demands to hand up the harbor city of Mariupol, where citizens are starved for food, water, and electricity, and violent conflict shows no signs of abating. Iryna Vereshchuk, Ukraine’s Deputy Prime Minister, stated on Monday that Ukraine had “obviously” refused a Russian demand for Mariupol residents to surrender and that the condition in the besieged city was “extremely terrible.”
