Harish Rawat, the Congress general secretary in charge, apologized on Wednesday for his “Panj Pyare” comment and said he will clean the premises of a gurdwara as an act of penance. After a meeting at the state Congress Bhawan, he referred to Punjab Pradesh Congress Committee leader Navjot Singh Sidhu and the four working presidents as “Panj Pyare.”
The term ‘Panj Pyare’ is used in Sikh tradition to refer to the Guru’s five beloveds. Guru Gobind Singh, the tenth and final Guru, initiated five men into the ‘Khalsa’ order in 1699. The name ‘Panj Pyare’ refers to a group of five baptized Sikhs who execute a baptism ritual to initiate Sikhs into the ‘Khalsa’ order.
