Farmers have the right to protest, but they cannot block highways forever, the Supreme Court said on Thursday. The Samyukta Kisan Morcha, an umbrella organization of farmers’ unions, was asked by a panel of Justices S K Kaul and C T Ravikumar if they had the authority to block the road.
SKM responded by claiming that the police can better handle the roads and that if they couldn’t, the farmers should protest at Ram Lila ground or Jantar Mantar in the national capital.
SG Tushar Mehta mentioned Republic Day violence at the hearing, claiming that the incident occurred despite farmers’ unions promising that there would be no violence during the tractor march on January 26.
