On November 14, the head of the Delhi Commission for Women (DCW), Swati Maliwal, wrote to President Ram Nath Kovind, pleading with him to revoke Kangana Ranaut’s Padma Shri, India’s fourth-highest civilian honor, for allegedly insulting the country’s independence.
On November 11, Ms. Ranaut sparked controversy by claiming that India gained “genuine freedom” in 2014, presumably alluding to the Narendra Modi-led government taking power, and referring to the country’s independence in 1947 as “bheek” (alms). Ms. Maliwal, in her letter, said the actor had “made certain outrageous statements disgracing the great freedom fighters of the country”.
