On Friday, Maharashtra BJP head Chandrakant Patil claimed actor Kangana Ranaut’s remark that India’s 1947 independence was “bheek” (alms) was entirely incorrect. The actor is in the middle of a firestorm after saying at a recent event that India “really earned independence” in 2014, a reference to the BJP’s election to power at the federal level.
“Kangana Ranaut’s comment on the country’s fight for Independence is completely wrong. Nobody has a right to pass a negative remark on the freedom movement,” Patil told reporters, though he added he did not know the “emotions” that made the actor utter such a statement.
