The Congress today slammed star Kangana Ranaut for portraying India’s independence in 1947 as “bheek,” or alms, and demanded that the government take back the Padma Shri award she received lately for “insulting” the country’s freedom fighter.
Ms. Ranaut claims India’s independence in 1947 was not freedom but “bheek” in a 24-second video that has gone viral (alms). “And we got true freedom in 2014,” she stated at a news channel event, to which some in the crowd were heard clapping. Ms. Ranaut’s words, according to Congress spokesperson Gourav Vallabh, have demonstrated what occurs when those who are not deserving of Padma awards are granted them.
