A youth is accused of using an offensive and altered photo as his WhatsApp status, injuring religious emotions. According to claims in the media, he allegedly changed a photo of a saffron flag flying above Mecca’s mosque. The youngster, identified as Abhishek Hiremath, was detained after a complaint was filed at the Old Hubballi police station. He lives in Hubballi’s Anand Nagar neighborhood, which has a higher Muslim population.
The populace was furious and dissatisfied with the police response. Demonstrators gheraoed the police station late Saturday night, pelting stones and causing damage to police cars. To keep the mob under control, police reverted to using lathi charges and rubber bullets. To disperse the gathering, they fired rounds into the air and launched tear gas shells.
