Sunderlal Bahuguna, environmentalist famous for his Chipko movement against the construction of the Tehri Dam breathed his last on Friday, 21st May. Bahuguna was admitted to AIIMS Rishikesh on 8th May after he tested positive for Covid. His condition deteriorated on Thursday night and he passed away on Friday at 12:05pm.
Many national leaders and politicians tweeted about him and expressed their condolences. The leaders include President Ramnath Kovind, Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Uttrakhand Chief Minister Tirath Singh Rawat, Congress leader Jairam Ramesh among others. “The void created by his passing away in the field of Environment conservation can never be filled”, Chief Minister Rawat said.
Sunderlal Bahuguna’s contributions in the field of environment conservation are innuemrable. He had observed various fasts and padyatras in order to fulfil his demands in the benefit of the environment. He was conferred with various awards including Padma Vibhushan which is the second highest civilian award in India.
