The Bahujan Samaj Party’s “Brahmin Sammelan”, which is scheduled to be held on Friday at the Taraji Resort, has been renamed as “Seminar in honor of the enlightened class”.
The change of name of the event came after an order of the High Court banned conducting rallies and programmes by political parties based on caste. On July 11, 2013, the Allahabad High Court, while hearing the PIL number 5889 filed by Motilal Yadav, banned events by political parties in UP on the basis of caste.
The BSP’s grand event is being seen as the party’s attempt to woo Brahmins ahead of the 2022 Uttar Pradesh assembly elections.
At the event, BSP national general secretary Satish Chandra Mishra, who has been given the organisational responsibility by party chief Mayawati, alleged that the Brahmin community is being “ignored and harassed” under the current regime of Bharatiya Janata Party and now people from across sections of the society have made up their mind to “give a full majority to the BSP like in 2007″.
