The Samajwadi Party has formally proclaimed its alliance with the Rashtriya Lok Dal for the upcoming assembly elections in western Uttar Pradesh, which might be a political game-changer.

The alliance between the two factions would most likely result in a social coalition consisting of the major peasant community, the Jats, and a sizable Muslim population. For the first time since the communal riots in Muzaffarnagar in 2013, a series of farmer maha panchayat held over the last several months brought both communities together on a shared platform.
