Ajit Pawar, the Deputy Chief Minister of Maharashtra, died in a plane crash early Wednesday while attempting to land at Baramati airport. Four other people travelling with him also lost their lives in the accident. The cause of the crash has not yet been confirmed, and officials from India’s Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau are heading to the site to examine the circumstances that led to the tragedy.

Following the incident, the Maharashtra government announced three days of official mourning across the state. During this period, flags will be flown at half mast, and schools as well as government offices will remain closed as a mark of respect to the late leader.

Four other people travelling with Deputy Chief Minister, also lost their lives in the accident.

Pawar’s body has been kept at a hospital in Baramati, where large crowds of family members, supporters, and party workers gathered to pay their respects. The atmosphere in the town remains sombre as mourners continue to arrive.

A veteran politician, Ajit Pawar played a central role in Maharashtra’s political landscape for several decades and was regarded as one of the most influential leaders in India’s wealthiest state. His death has left a significant void in state politics.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed shock and deep grief over the incident, joining several national leaders in condoling Pawar’s demise. Home Minister Amit Shah is also expected to attend the funeral.

The state government confirmed that Ajit Pawar will be cremated on Thursday morning, with senior political leaders and dignitaries expected to be present. Meanwhile, investigative teams are expected to analyse flight data, weather conditions, and technical aspects of the aircraft to determine what caused the crash.
