Two Killed and Three Injured After Being Hit by Suburban Train Near Sandhurst Road in Mumbai

Mumbai | Two people lost their lives and three others were injured after a suburban train hit them near Sandhurst Road railway station in south Mumbai on Thursday evening. The incident occurred around 7 pm, shortly after local train services were affected by a sudden strike by Central Railway employees protesting against an FIR filed in connection with the June 9 Mumbra train accident.

According to railway officials, the victims were walking along the tracks after getting down from the wrong side of the train when they were hit. Emergency teams rushed the five individuals to a nearby hospital where two were declared dead on arrival. Of the three injured, two left against medical advice while one remains under treatment.

The tragic event came amid rising tensions in the Central Railway network following an FIR registered against two engineers — a senior section engineer and a section engineer — under Section 125(a)(b) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita for endangering public safety. The charges stem from the Mumbra mishap in which four passengers died after two trains brushed against each other, causing commuters on the footboard to fall onto the tracks.

The filing of the case sparked outrage among railway employees’ unions, who staged a flash protest at the busy Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus. The strike disrupted local train services between 5.50 pm and 6.45 pm, creating heavy congestion during evening peak hours.

Senior Central Railway officials later met with the protesters and assured them that the matter would be taken up with the state government. Following the assurance, train services resumed gradually. Chief Public Relations Officer Swapnil Nila confirmed that operations had normalized by late evening, though passengers continued to face delays and crowding.
