A woman teacher has been taken into custody in connection with the death of a Class 6 student, who was allegedly compelled to do one hundred sit ups for reaching school late in the Palghar district of Maharashtra, an official confirmed on Thursday.
The teacher has been dismissed from the private school located in Sativali, in the Vasai area and has been charged under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita for culpable homicide not amounting to murder according to officials from the Waliv police station.
The student reportedly arrived late on November 8 and was told to perform the sit ups as punishment. Her mother stated that the child was forced to do the exercise while carrying her school bag calling it an inhuman act.
Authorities said the thirteen year old student had pre existing health concerns and was unable to withstand the punishment. She later fell, seriously ill and was admitted to a hospital in Mumbai, where she passed away after seven days.
The incident triggered protests from local residents and members of the Maharashtra Navnirman Sena, which led to the police filing a case. The teacher was arrested on Tuesday night, according to the official.
The state education department has begun an inquiry into the matter, while the Vasai Virar Municipal Corporation has also started its own investigation.
