Mumbai Police Officer Acts to Save Hostages During Powai Studio Crisis

Mumbai | An assistant police inspector from Powai police station took immediate action during a tense hostage situation in Mumbai when a gunman, identified as Rohit Arya, held 17 children and two women captive inside R A Studio in Powai. The officer, Amol Waghmare, opened fire after Arya aimed his weapon directly at him, creating a life-threatening situation.

According to officials, Waghmare had first attempted to calm Arya and persuade him to surrender peacefully, but the situation escalated when Arya pointed his gun at the officer in close quarters, prompting Waghmare to fire in self-defense.

Police Investigation and Evidence Collection

Following the incident, the Crime Branch initiated a detailed investigation into the case. The weapon found in Arya’s possession was seized and sent to the Forensic Science Laboratory to determine whether he had fired any shots. Officials also gathered additional evidence from the scene, including a suspicious cloth with a strong odor that investigators suspect might have been soaked in a chemical intended for arson. The team is now speaking with individuals associated with the project to understand Arya’s possible motives.

Background of the Hostage-Taker

Preliminary findings reveal that Arya, originally from Anand in Gujarat, had been living in Pune before relocating to Mumbai two months prior to the event. He was married and had a ten-year-old son. At the time of the incident, his wife was in Ahmedabad. Since no immediate family members were available in Mumbai, Arya’s body was kept at the state-run J J Hospital until his relatives arrived for the postmortem examination.
