President Gotabaya Rajapaksa of Sri Lanka lost his majority in parliament on Tuesday, when a number of MPs from the governing party and its associates sat in the House on their own, abandoning the administration, which has been widely chastised for “mismanaging” the financial environment. The governing Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP or People’s Front)-led alliance lost its support in the 225-member legislature after over 42 MPs, notably important ally Sri Lanka Freedom Party (SLFP).
Their departure indicated the government’s reputation plummeting, which had given it a commanding two-thirds mandate in 2020. However, no vote of confidence has been set to assess the government’s or opposition’s power.
