The deaths of people in Bucha, a region outside of Kyiv that recovered from Russian forces, were termed “genocide” by Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky on Monday. “These are crimes against humanity, and the world will acknowledge them as genocide,” Zelensky said after a visit to Bucha, where bodies were found scattered throughout the town after Kyiv’s forces recovered it.
Following the discovery of mass burial sites and reportedly killed people in Bucha, Ukraine and Western countries have charged Russian forces with atrocities, triggering threats of proceedings at the International Criminal Court. However, the Russian Defence Ministry refuted that its troops massacred residents in the area reclaimed by Ukrainian troops lately.
