Hundreds of supporters gathered Monday morning at the prime minister’s official house in Colombo, Sri Lanka’s commercial metropolis, to encourage Mahinda Rajapaksa not to resign.

During the economic and social crisis, the country’s most powerful man, and scion of the dynasty to which his younger brother, President Gotabaya Rajapaksa, also belongs, was considering a move to pave the way for an interim government. According to witnesses, less than an hour later, members of the same crowd rampaged around the city with iron bars and hitting anti-government protestors, resulting in the worst day of violence in months of protests.
