A court in Bangladesh announced on Monday that two men accused of promoting communal hate on social media have acknowledged their crimes. After an alleged blasphemous remark on social media, violence against Bangladesh’s minority Hindu community erupted on October 13 during the Durga Puja celebrations. For a few days, the chaos remained and expanded to other sections of the country.
Around 70 Hindu homes were set ablaze in Rangpur, Pirganj sub-district, on October 17, according to authorities. Shaikat Mandal and his accomplice Rabiul Islam were accused of provoking the unrest in Rangpur by spreading communal animosity on social media. In a pre-trial hearing on Monday, they admitted to their crime.
