Apple Daily, Hong Kong’s pro-democracy daily, stated Wednesday that it will publish its final issue after regulators seized its assets under a broad new national security law, effectively shutting the city’s most China-critical media source. The judgment is the biggest blow to Hong Kong’s liberties and will heighten concerns about whether the international financial center can continue to function as a media hub as China attempts to stifle speech.
Journalists outside of the paper’s offices on Wednesday evening reported they intended to produce one million copies overnight, an astounding quantity given Hong Kong’s population of 7.5 million.
