Currency exchange rates and commodities prices seem to be drastically changing in North Korea, according to media sources and analysts, as a restart of substantial commerce with China has yet to materialize, compounding the misery for citizens experiencing food shortages.
After gradually increasing in the first few months of the year, China’s shipments to North Korea plummeted to $2.71 million in May, down from $28.75 million in April, dashing merchants’ expectations that more than a year of anti-coronavirus restrictions would soon be lifted.
North Korea is very isolated, making it difficult to determine the country’s status. However, rumors this week that North Korea’s greatest ally, China, intends to leave tight border restrictions in position for at least another year have put doubt on the country’s prospects.
