The Taliban’s leaders in the restive Herat province have published the first ‘fatwa’ since their rapid takeover of Afghanistan last week, prohibiting co-education in government and private universities. The Taliban have characterized co-education as the “source of all evils in society,” just days after promising to support women’s rights in Afghanistan.

After the US-backed Afghan government crumbled and President Ghani fled the country, the Taliban seized power in Afghanistan, bringing an unprecedented end to a two-decade mission by the US and its allies to transform the war-torn country.
