The Nagaland Legislative Assembly began the session with the national anthem for the first time in 58 years of state formation. This history was made about a week ago, when the seventh session of the 13th assembly was started with the national anthem before Governor RN Ravi’s address. The state of Nagaland came into existence on 1 December 1963. The elected government came into existence after the first assembly elections in January 1964 and the first assembly was formed on 11 February 1964. Despite this, the tune of ‘Jana Gana Mana’ was never echoed in the state assembly. However, Assembly Commissioner Dr. PJ Antony says that there was no ban on singing the national anthem in the assembly. Despite this, there is no order as to why the national anthem was not sung here. This time Assembly Speaker Sharingen Longkumer decided to play the national anthem before the Governor’s address and for this the consent of the government led by Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio was obtained. After this, the national anthem was played for the first time when the Governor arrived before the start of the 7th session on 12 February and all the legislators wearing masks stood together to honor it.
