Vice President Kamala Harris slammed China’s incursions in the South China Sea, warning that Beijing’s activities amount to “coercion” and “intimidation,” and stating that the US will stand by its partners in the region against Beijing’s efforts.
In the face of Chinese threats, Harris, who is on a weeklong tour of Southeast Asia, vowed that the US “stands with our allies and partners.”
The address aimed to reaffirm the United States’ commitment to its allies in an area that has become increasingly important to the Biden administration, which has made combating China’s worldwide influence a pillar of its foreign policy.
And it occurred at a crucial time for the US, as the Biden administration strives to reinforce the country’s pivot to Asia, while America’s decades-long concentration on the Middle East comes to a halt with the tumultuous pullout from Afghanistan.
