After a member of the extreme organization Tehrik-e-Labbaik Pakistan (TLP) vandalized a nine-foot-tall statue of Maharaja Ranjit Singh at the Lahore Fort in Pakistan’s Punjab state, Union Minister Hardeep Singh Puri responded angrily on Tuesday.
Puri tweeted that the vandalism of Maharaja Ranjit Singh Ji, India’s great unifier, in Lahore must be firmly denounced. This act, which tries to erase the subcontinent’s shared heritage, demonstrates how radical beliefs are emboldened in our fragile neighborhood.
In the early half of the nineteenth century, Maharaja Ranjit Singh founded the Sikh empire, which governed the northwest Indian subcontinent. The accused are shown on video chanting slogans, breaking the arm of the statue, and detaching Singh’s bust from the horse, and hurling it on the ground before being dragged by another man.
