The Centre has issued new guidelines forbidding the manufacturing, import, stocking, distribution, sale, and use of certain single-use plastic products, such as plates, cups, cutlery, and packing films over sweets and cigarette packages.
According to a notification dated August 12, the thickness of plastic carry bags will be increased from 50 microns to 75 millimeters on September 30, 2021, and to 120 microns on December 31, 2022.
Plastic packaging waste not covered by the phase-out of identified single-use plastic items, according to the Environment Ministry, should be collected and managed in an environmentally sustainable manner through the Extended Producer Responsibility of the producer, importer, and brand owner (PIBO) as per the Plastic Waste Management Rules, 2016.
