BENGALURU: With 5,92,182 active cases, Karnataka on Wednesday climbed to the top of the country’s COVID-19 list going past Maharashtra’s 5,46,129.
This number is a clear indicator of the burden on the healthcare system, including patients in hospitals, Covid Care Centers and home isolation.
Karnataka’s surpassing Maharashtra comes amid the neighbouring state’s fall in fresh infections and rise in recoveries. The highest number of active cases in Maharashtra was on April 22 when it touched 6,99,858. Maharashtra’s active caseload is seeing a gradual reduction as daily recoveries have overtaken new cases.
Karnataka on Wednesday reported 39,998 fresh cases, the third highest in the country after Maharashtra (46,781) and Kerala (43,529). While Bengaluru saw 16,286 new infections, eight other districts reported over 1,000 new cases.
Having conducted 1.3 lakh tests, the state’s daily positivity rate was 29.6%. Cumulative fatalities in Karnataka crossed the 20,000-mark on Wednesday as the state reported 517 new deaths. The number of deaths crossed the 500-mark for the third time this month and total deaths are 20,368. Bengaluru reported 275 deaths.
The Technical Advisory Committee of the Karnataka government has projected that cases are likely to reduce by May-end. “In view of the large burden of active cases, home isolation must receive priority attention and medical kits must be given to those in need of it. They require constant monitoring. All those with comorbidities, senior citizens, those who do not have caregivers and lack required facilities at home must be shifted to Covid Care Centres where they can get medical attention,” said TAC chairperson Dr MK Sudarshan.
Govt to recruit 2,480 doctors The state health and family welfare department is gearing up to ensure the best utilisation of ventilators and oxygenated beds in all taluk hospitals which are currently facing shortage of trained staff. On Wednesday, health minister K Sudhakar said the government is in the process of recruiting 2,480 doctors, including 720 specialists.
