Following a request by Muslim organizations for a bandh on Thursday to oppose the Karnataka High Court’s decision sustaining the prohibition on wearing hijab in academic institutions, a few stores in Bengaluru were closed. In Udupi, however, there was a mixed reaction to the bandh. The opposing Congress resolved to adopt a neutral stance on Wednesday. Regarding the attitude of Congress Muslim leaders on the hijab matter, a Congress representative said, “We had a meeting with religious leaders and have agreed to support the legal struggle on the matter.”

Following the Holi holiday, the Supreme Court said it will reconsider hearing an appeal against the HC ruling. Chief Justice of India N V Ramana informed senior attorney Sanjay Hegde, who had requested an expedited listing. Starting Thursday, the Supreme Court will be off for three days for Holi and will reconvene on March 21.
