Akhilesh Yadav, the president of the Samajwadi Party, announced on Monday that he will not run in the upcoming Uttar Pradesh assembly elections. Yadav, a former Uttar Pradesh chief minister, stated that an election alliance between the SP and the Rashtriya Lok Dal (RLD) has been finalized.

The Samajwadi Party failed to retain power in the 2017 Uttar Pradesh assembly elections, winning only 47 seats. The BJP won 312 seats in the 2017 Uttar Pradesh assembly elections, and Yogi Adityanath was appointed as the state’s Chief Minister.
