The Uttar Pradesh government has ordered a comprehensive investigation into the financial transactions of madrassas operating across the state with a focus on identifying sources of funding and construction expenditure. The move comes amid ongoing inquiries into suspected foreign funding being routed to these institutions.

According to official instructions all district minority welfare officers have been directed to examine the cost and funding sources of madrassa buildings and submit detailed reports to the directorate. The objective is to trace the financial trail and determine whether the funds used for construction and operations have been obtained through legitimate means.

An ATS level Special Investigation Team is already probing cases related to foreign funding. It is estimated that nearly four thousand madrassas in Uttar Pradesh may have received funds from foreign sources. Preliminary findings have revealed that several madrassas lack clear income sources despite operating from large and well constructed buildings. In many cases operators have failed to provide verified documentation explaining the origin of funds used for construction.

The Minority Welfare Director has instructed district officials to extend full cooperation to the ATS during the investigation. Officials have been told to provide all necessary assistance whenever requested to ensure a thorough and transparent probe.

As part of the verification process the bank accounts of both recognised and unrecognised madrassas will be examined. Authorities have also been directed to scrutinise the personal bank accounts of madrassa operators to verify financial transactions. Any irregularities detected during this process must be reported immediately for further investigation.

District officials have additionally been instructed to collect inputs from local intelligence units and other agencies regarding foreign funding and verify the information through independent sources before submitting a comprehensive report. The findings will form the basis for further action by the government.
