Twitter expressed its opinion on revised digital rules issued by government and expressed concern over “the potential threat to freedom of expression” and “the use of intimidation tactics by the police”. In their statement, the social media platform ask for changes to certain sections in the rules “that inhibit free, open conversation”.
Twitter has been under government scrutiny after it marked posts by some BJP leaders on the “Congress toolkit” issue as “manipulated media”. The Delhi Police paid Twitter India’s offices in Delhi and Gurgaon a visit on 24 May and gave them a notice to explain their position.
The changed rules came into force on 26 May and require websites to enforce a system to address complaints and trace the “first originator” of content that aims to “undermine the sovereignty of India, security of the state, or public order”.
