On Tuesday, the government issued a plea to all Indian nationals living in and around Mazar-e-Sharif, Afghanistan, to return to India.
The government’s decision to evacuate Indian citizens comes as Taliban terrorists prepare to strike Mazar-e Sharif. After a blitz across the north that prompted tens of thousands of civilians to evacuate their homes for the relative safety of Kabul and other cities, the Taliban took control of six Afghan provincial capitals on Tuesday.
As the Taliban pushed towards Kandahar, amidst fighting and violence, India evacuated all of its India-based soldiers by special flight earlier in July. The Indian mission is now staffed solely by loyal Afghan personnel employed by the Indian government.
