Congress leader Rahul Gandhi may appear before a Surat court on Thursday to defend himself in a criminal defamation case over ‘Modi surname’ remark.
The defamation case was filed against him by local Gujarat MLA Purnesh Modi of the BJP. During the campaign for the Lok Sabha election 2019, Rahul Gandhi had taken a dig at his rivals saying “why all thieves share the Modi surname”.
Earlier, Rahul Gandhi had appeared before the court in October 2019 and had pleaded not guilty for his comment.
During the hearing in the case, Rahul Gandhi had told the Surat court that he did not say anything wrong when he said all thieves share the Modi surname.
According to Gujarat Congress chief Amit Chavda, Rahul Gandhi will arrive in Surat at 10:00 am and leave the city at 12:30 pm after his deposition in the court.
Amit Chavda said Rahul Gandhi’s visit was not about politics but only about the court case.
