Terrorists from the Taliban entered Afghanistan’s capital Kabul today, as the US evacuated diplomats from its embassy by helicopter and a government minister announced that power would be handed over to an interim administration. A senior interior ministry official told Reuters that Taliban insurgents were approaching the capital “from all sides,” but provided no further details. There were no reports of violence.
Taliban spokesperson Zabihullah Mujahid stated in a statement that the organization was in discussions with the government about a peaceful surrender of Kabul. Diplomats have been taken aback by the Afghan government’s defense; just last week, a US intelligence estimate said Kabul might hold out for at least three months.
