Mumbai | On the Ghatkopar to Versova Line 1, Mumbai Metro services were delayed on Monday evening following a technical issue in a rake at Andheri station. The disruption occurred around 5 pm during peak hours and affected one of the busiest metro routes in the city leaving thousands of commuters stranded on their way home.
Officials from Mumbai Metro One Private Limited said that services were running behind schedule due to a technical fault and assured passengers that efforts were underway to restore normal operations. The company shared an update on social media around 5 30 pm expressing regret for the inconvenience and thanking commuters for their patience.
By 5 40 pm services were reported to have resumed on the eleven kilometer stretch though no details were provided about the cause of the malfunction. According to sources the issue began when a metro rake broke down at Andheri station and had to be towed away using another train.
The incident led to overcrowding and long queues at several metro stations along the corridor. Passengers reported that trains between Versova and Ghatkopar were halted for nearly forty five minutes and also expressed dissatisfaction over the lack of clear announcements about the delay.
A spokesperson for the metro operator said that further information about the disruption would be shared later. Mumbai Metro Line 1 which connects Versova Andheri and Ghatkopar carries about five lakh passengers every weekday with the highest daily ridership reaching nearly five and a half lakh commuters.
The corridor which began operations on June 8 2014 serves as a key east west transit link in the city and connects with Line 2A at DN Nagar Line 7 at Western Express Highway and Line 3 at Marol Naka strengthening the suburban transport network.
