The cases of mucormycosis have been gradually increasing on an everyday basis. It is also known as the “black fungus”  which is sometimes causing more death than Covid-19. Doctors say that the misuse of steroids should be controlled as it has been seen as a major cause of the fungal infection.

Dr. Randeep Guleria, AIIMS director warned on Saturday about the cases of mucormycosis infection which is on the rise among various susceptible patients. He added that the major cause for the same is considered to be the misuse of steroids. He said that the patients having diabetes or Covid-19 infection and are taking steroids have a major chance of getting the fungal infection.

The director of the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), Dr. Guleria said that to prevent the spread of the fungal infection, misuse of steroids should be stopped. He also added that the infections that re fungal as well as bacterial are causing more deaths in the recent days including the Covid-19 virus. Thus it becomes more important to follow the protocols of infection control practices at the hospitals.

The AIIMS Chief also said that the spores of the black fungus are found in soil, air as well as food. In the guidelines over black fungus infection, the central government requested people to be extra careful with regard to the infection protocols since the fungus enters the body through any cut, scrape, burn or any type of skin trauma where the skin comes in contact with the fungal spores present in the environment.
