Mehul Choksi was caught in Dominica on Wednesday night after Interpol issued a Yellow Notice against him. Having arrived in Dominica from Antigua, he was arrested by local police while trying to flee to Cuba in a boat. India is looking to diplomatically secure him as his entry to Dominica was illegal.
He took citizenship of Antigua and Barbuda in 2017 using the Citizenship by Investment programme before leaving India in January 2018. Gaston Browne, the PM of Antigua and Barbuda, has asked Dominica to return Choksi directly to India.
Meanwhile, Choksi’s lawyer stated that Mehul was no longer an Indian citizen and could only be returned to Antigua.
The diamond jeweller is wanted by Indian judicial authorities for his alleged involvement in criminal conspiracy and fraud.
