India sees 4,000 Covid deaths for third straight day, 3.43 lakh new cases in 24 hours

Over 3.43 lakh fresh cases of Covid-19 in the past 24 hours, ending Friday morning, have taken the overall tally to 2,40,46,809 with active cases now at 37 lakh.

At least 4,000 people have died of Covid-19 in a span of 24 hours, taking India’s cumulative toll to 2,62,317, the Union health ministry data updated at 8 am shows. Maximum casualties have been reported in Maharashtra (850), followed by Karnataka (344).

India’s cumulative recoveries on Friday climbed to 2,00,79,599 with the country recording 3,44,776 recoveries in a day. At 3.44 lakh, recoveries marginally exceed the daily tally of Covid-19 cases on Friday, as per the latest Union health ministry data. Top five states which have registered maximum cases are Maharashtra with 42,582 cases, followed by Kerala at 39,955 cases, Karnataka 35,297 cases, Tamil Nadu 30,621 cases and Andhra Pradesh 22,399 cases.Around 49.79 per cent of the new cases are reported from these five states — Maharashtra, Kerala, Karnataka, Tamil Nadu and Andhra Pradesh — with Maharashtra alone accounting for 12.41 per cent of the fresh cooronavirus cases.

The updated data on Friday showed the number of new cases dropping in Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh, which are signs of improvement in southern states, except Kerala.

In Maharashtra, meanwhile, the death toll once again climbed to 800 on Friday.

On Thursday, India had recorded 3,62,727 Covid-19 cases and 4,120 deaths. Meanwhile, Maharashtra reported the highest cases, a day after Karnataka soared ahead in terms of new cases.

India’s Covid-19 tally had crossed the 20-lakh mark on August 7, 30 lakh on August 23, 40 lakh on September 5 and 50 lakh on September 16. It went past 60 lakh on September 28, 70 lakh on October 11, crossed 80 lakh on October 29, 90 lakh on November 20 and surpassed the 1-crore mark on December 19. India crossed the grim milestone of 2 crore on May 4.
