The alleged plan to execute a flawless murder turned into a failed attempt when Delhi Police uncovered the truth behind the death of 32-year-old UPSC aspirant Ramkesh Meena. The crime, orchestrated by forensic science student Amrita Chauhan, aimed to look like an accidental fire but was dismantled through expert investigation and CCTV evidence.
According to Delhi Police, Amrita Chauhan, aged 21, along with her former boyfriend Sumit Kashyap, 27, and their associate Sandeep Kumar, 29, strangled Meena in his Gandhi Vihar apartment earlier this month. After the killing, the trio poured oil, ghee, and wine on the body, intending to ensure it was completely burnt. The motive, as police revealed, was Meena’s alleged refusal to delete Amrita’s private photos and videos stored on his hard drive.
Amrita, who studied forensic science and frequently watched crime-based web series, reportedly used her knowledge to fabricate the scene as a gas cylinder blast. Initially, investigators found a burnt body and a burst gas cylinder, which appeared consistent with an accidental fire.
However, forensic specialists noticed irregularities in the burn pattern that did not match a typical explosion. This prompted a deeper probe. Surveillance footage from the area showed two masked men entering the building on the night of October 5, followed later by Amrita and another individual. Shortly after they left, a fire broke out in the apartment. These visuals redirected the investigation toward foul play.
Through phone records and technical tracking, investigators confirmed Amrita’s presence near the crime scene. She was arrested from Moradabad on October 18, where she confessed to her involvement during interrogation. She claimed that Meena’s refusal to delete their intimate recordings pushed her to plan revenge with the help of her ex-boyfriend Sumit. Sandeep also joined them in executing the plan.
Police reports stated that on the night between October 5 and 6, the three suspects entered Meena’s flat. Sumit and Sandeep strangled the victim while Amrita poured oil, ghee, and wine on his body. Sumit, who worked as an LPG distributor, opened the gas valve and set the fire to simulate an accident. The group locked the apartment from inside by reaching through a gap in the iron gate and fled with Meena’s hard disk, laptop, and personal items. About an hour later, the explosion occurred, setting the flat ablaze.
Authorities said they have substantial proof, including CCTV recordings, recovered digital evidence, and physical items linked to the suspects. Following Amrita’s arrest, police seized a hard drive, a trolley bag, and a shirt belonging to the deceased. Sumit was later captured from Moradabad, and Sandeep was arrested two days afterward. Police have sent the recovered hard disk for forensic examination, and the investigation remains ongoing.
Special Commissioner of Police Ravindra Yadav stated that the crime was meticulously planned but was solved even more precisely through scientific investigation. He added that no matter how perfect a plan may seem, criminals always leave traces, and the police were able to identify and connect those clues effectively.
